We have tried to make it as easy as possible to create content pages for the site. I have found a lack of time to work on the site, so if you are willing to help, or are interested in web development, feel free to offer help and I'll try my best to help you.

What you need to know or learn
-PHP
-HTML
The site is powered by PHP. To create content (or at least to format it a bit), you should know some HTML.

How the Core works
The core is as simple as we could possibly make it. I'll add a sample page as soon as it's made. There are "page parsers," which render how a page should look depending on the page type. For example, ".feed" is a page which displays an RSS feed. ".xml" is not an XML parser... It's a static page written in wannabe XML. ".url" is sortof like ".feed," but it simply steals content from another page. ".php" is what most people will be working with.

Using PHP to create a page
This first post will only cover the simple way to create content with PHP. Other posts to follow will cover more things to do in detail. The page maker will check for 2 arrays to turn into content, $titles[] and $conts[]. $titles[] corresponds to the heading of some content and $conts[] is the content itself. They are parallel arrays... This is the easiest way to have the core add the content to the page.

Example Hello World!

Passing Variables
Passing variables to the script is quite easy. You can either use "?options..." after the page for regular $_GET[] variables, or you can use "clean urls" to get the variables. If you choose to use "clean urls," you will have to look at the "$pageParts[]" array. The page parts array is a set of values after the "/" splitting the URL sequesnce of "/"s. So if the URL was "acm.fit.edu/page/somestuff/somemorestuff" $pageParts[] would contain {"page","somestuff","somemorestuff"}.


Adding Items to the Menu
It's quite easy to add an item to the menu. Simply add the following code to your page (changing the obvious parts).
PHP Code:
$pageMenu['Menu Section']['Link Title'] = 'link url'; 


Functions Available
forceDownload($file) - When the page is loaded, it forces a download window to appear. Not really useful, but I thought you like to know it's there.

processURL($url, $posted) - Uses cURL to download $url. $posted is if you need to pass some $_POST variables to the array. It's somewhat useful, like if you want to integrate parts of another site in it.

By submitting code, you are giving the right to modify and use the code submitted to the ACM at Florida Tech. Code submitted may not be used at all. If you are planning on coding something for the site, please ask if to see if it something that can be used. Code will be tested prior to it being uploaded and used on the actual site.

Be sure to make a good first impression with your teachers and show up on time and actively participate in their lesson.

The first ACM Meeting will be on a Tuesday August 19 in OEC 118 at 8 PM.

Here are some tips for continuing (or starting) a great academic year at Florida Tech:
  • Show up early to class. Get a good night's rest. A good night's rest (of at least 7 hours) is better than drinking coffee or energy drinks in the morning. Coffee and energy drinks may help at first, but having an energy crash latter on in the day isn't.
  • Start working on assignments as soon as you can. They may not be do for a couple of weeks, but if you're busy playing video games and procrastinating, those two weeks will go by fast. You'll also have less time to perfect your project for a great grade.
  • Read at least 6 pages of a non-school book. Studies have shown that students who read for fun daily have better grades than those who don't. Picture books don't count.
  • Keep in touch with your teachers. Make sure they know you (in a good way). Not only will they know your name, but they'll be more willing to help someone they know than a student that's a stranger. (Also, rumor has it that if a teacher is oscillating on what a student's grade should be, they'll give a higher score to a student they know than a student they don't know).
  • Take notes on paper and then rewrite (or type) them up again later. A laptop sounds like a great tool for taking notes, but it can also become a great distraction during a lackluster lecture.
  • Do crossword puzzles or play sudoku during you're free time. This will help keep your mind active and thinking, plus it'll help you learn interesting new words.
  • And most importantly, join the Association for Computing Machinery FIT Chapter.
